Advance buy financing
Advance buy financing for metals and mineral production.
An advance buy pays for product before it is delivered. Structured well, it is a disciplined commercial arrangement around production, inventory and delivery — not simply an early cash request.
The structure
How advance buy financing works
An advance buy, also called an advance or prepaid purchase, is a commercial purchase in which some or all of the price for a specified product is paid before delivery. The seller's core obligation is to deliver product of the agreed specification on the agreed schedule; the contract defines what happens if it does not.
Because value is exchanged before the product moves, advance buys depend on clear protections: title to the product, specification and independent inspection, delivery schedule, pricing mechanics, logistics and remedies. Advance buys are related to offtake financing, which typically relies on a longer-term sales contract; an advance buy is the purchase itself, paid ahead of delivery.
Lankford Metals' role
What we do — and what we do not represent.
01
Structuring
We shape the purchase terms — specification, title, inspection, pricing, delivery schedule, drawdown structure and remedies — so the arrangement can be evaluated by capital providers and counterparties.
02
Package preparation and diligence
We organize the evidence into an institutional package — transaction summary, document index, sources and uses, risk discussion and diligence map — and isolate what must still be proven.
03
Capital coordination
We introduce prepared opportunities to capital providers whose mandate fits the commodity, stage, jurisdiction, size and structure.
04
Advisory and direct financing
Submitting an inquiry does not create an advisory, fiduciary or client relationship; any engagement is established only by executed written agreement. Lankford Metals does not represent that it will provide financing directly. Any participation by Lankford Metals or an affiliate is decided transaction by transaction, and some activities may require execution through appropriately licensed or registered parties.
Transaction types
Where this structure is used.
Production prepayment
Payment ahead of delivery against an operation's scheduled future output.
Inventory and stockpile purchase
Purchase of existing stockpiled or warehoused product, where title, inspection and storage are central.
Delivery-stream advances
Advances released in tranches tied to defined shipments or delivery milestones.
Strategic supply arrangements
Advance purchase structures that secure supply of a specified product for a buyer over a defined period.
Stage-specific considerations
What changes by stage.
Producing operations
Most suited to advance buys: consistent output, established metallurgy and a delivery record reduce operational risk.
Ramp-up and restart
Possible, but capital providers will look closely at commissioning evidence, early production data and contingency for delays.
Stockpiled inventory
Title, independent inspection and assay, storage control and insurance carry most of the weight.
Traders and aggregators
Source of material, chain of custody, provenance and the back-to-back sale position are central.
Commercial and underwriting factors
What capital providers weigh.
There is no single pass mark. Each factor is assessed against the structure, stage and the mandate of the capital provider.
Production capacity and record
Evidence that the operation can deliver the contracted product on schedule.
Specification and assay
Consistent product quality supported by independent inspection and assay.
Title and encumbrances
Clear title to the product, free of competing liens, prior sales or pledges.
Logistics and storage
A defined route from site to delivery point, with storage, transport and insurance arrangements.
Pricing and remedies
A clear pricing mechanism and enforceable remedies for late, short or off-specification delivery.
Compliance and provenance
KYC, sanctions screening, export authority and responsible-sourcing documentation for the material and the parties.
Evidence and documentation
What is typically required.
The exact list depends on the structure and the capital provider. Materials can be exchanged under NDA.
- Production records and the forward production or delivery schedule
- Independent assay and inspection reports
- Title documents, warehouse receipts or stockpile surveys
- Mining licences, permits and export authorizations
- Logistics, storage and transport arrangements
- Insurance covering the product in storage and transit
- Financial statements and existing encumbrances on the product
- KYC and beneficial-ownership information for all parties
Questions
Frequently asked questions.
What is an advance buy in metals and mining?
An advance buy is a purchase in which some or all of the price for a specified metal or mineral product is paid before delivery. It is governed by a purchase contract that sets the specification, title transfer, delivery schedule, pricing and remedies, rather than by a conventional loan agreement.
How is an advance buy different from a loan or offtake financing?
A loan is repaid in money; an advance buy is generally settled by delivering product. Offtake financing typically uses a longer-term sales contract as support for capital, while an advance buy is the purchase itself, paid ahead of delivery. In practice the structures are often combined.
Which operations are typically suited to advance buys?
Producing operations with consistent output, established metallurgy and a delivery record are generally the strongest candidates, along with verifiable stockpiled inventory. Exploration-stage projects are generally not suited, because there is no product to deliver.
What protections are typical in an advance buy?
Typical protections include clear title and the absence of competing liens, independent inspection and assay, defined specifications and delivery schedules, pricing mechanics, insurance, staged drawdowns tied to delivery milestones, and remedies for late, short or off-specification delivery.
How long does an advance buy take to arrange?
Timing depends on the quality of the evidence, diligence findings, counterparty approvals and documentation, so we do not quote a fixed timeline. The fastest way to start is a short inquiry describing the operation, the product and the delivery schedule; a complete document set shortens diligence.
